Saunas are a staple in high-end health clubs & gyms, they are even becoming a popular choice at home. This is because there are plentiful benefits to using them.
1. Promotes Muscle Recovery
One of the biggest benefits of sauna use after exercise is the positive effect it can have on muscle recovery. One study found that 30 minute sessions in a sauna decreased post-workout muscle soreness & boosted revery. This is because the heat from the sauna enhances the circulation of oxygen & nutrient rich blood throughout your body. This then helps muscles damaged by exercise to repair. There's no wonder so many professional athletes like using saunas!
2. Improves Heart Health
Whenever you increase the circulation of oxygen rich blood, you will see an improvement in cardio vascular function. A 2019 studio found that the changes found to your heart when you sit in a sauna & similar to those you get from a short, moderate workout.
When using a sauna we see overall heart rate & core temperature increase, as well as improved blood pressure & distribution of blood throughout the body. The same can be said when we perform moderate cardio.
A 2015 study that included 2,300 Finnish men found that the risk of death from heart disease was 27 percent lower among those who reported using a sauna two to three times per week than those who said they used it only once a week.
3. Promotes Relaxation
Sitting in a sauna for 15 - 30 minutes at a time forces us to be at one with our thoughts. It allows us to check in with ourselves & practice mindfulness. Modern lives are so busy it can be easy to put your mental wellbeing on the backburner. Using a sauna multiple times a week forces you to give yourself that time to reflect & focus.
It is important to note that sauna use can have some drawbacks, for example, it will amplify dehydration. If you've just finished a high intensity workout be sure to hydrate before jumping into a sauna.
It can also stress the heart, for most people this stress is good & similar to the kind of stress you feel from exercise, however for those with pre-existing conditions it can be too much. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting your sauna journey.
